On sunny afternoons the large south west facing skylights warm the space rapidly. When the temperature rises above 23°C a fan clicks in, pulling the air through the vents above the mezzanine, down a duct into the extension. More on the warm air ducting.... The warm air also pre-warms the cold water storage tank, which is hidden behind laminated chipboard from an old kitchen unit. In summer we open the skylights to draw cool air from the garden through the house using the stack effect. The short doors lead onto storage space. They were cut down from standard sized FSC certified pine doors. The offcuts were re-used to panel the bath. The doors and the wall behind the mezzanine are lined with 100mm of insulation. At the end of the mezzanine a toughened glass skylight bring light down into the bathroom. |
